Question and Answers

What is being announced in March 2022?

Citrix is announcing support for public cloud with Current Releases (CR) and Long Term Service Releases (LTSR) starting with the 2203 release in March of 2022 for customers with Hybrid Rights. Hybrid Rights are term-based subscription licenses that are provided in addition to the cloud service subscription when customer transitions or trades up from a perpetual license to a cloud service subscription. Customers may also renew Hybrid Rights with their cloud subscription after their initial transition or trade-up term.

The Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 release will reinstate support for cloud-hosted workloads (VDAs) in our Current Releases (CR) and Long Term Service Releases (LTSR) starting with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 for customers with Hybrid Rights subscriptions only.

Customers with perpetual licenses or on-premises term-based subscriptions will not be eligible to take advantage of cloud-hosted workloads (VDAs) with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2003 or higher.

Customers leveraging the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 1912 Long Term Service Release (LTSR) for public cloud workloads (VDAs), can now leverage a Hybrid Rights subscription to continue utilizing public clouds with the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 release.

Why is Citrix making this change?

Previously in March 2020, Citrix announced that engineering efforts would focus solely on our public cloud integration with our Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops cloud service to ensure the best performance and compatibility with public cloud-like Azure, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services and that public cloud support was being deprecated from Current Releases starting with 2003. Citrix remains committed to prioritizing engineering efforts on public cloud integration with the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service; however, Citrix recognizes that there are additional factors, such as geographical location, that impact a customer’s ability to leverage the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service. Therefore, we are reinstating support for cloud-hosted workloads (VDAs) with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Long Term Service Release and Current Releases starting with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 for customers with Hybrid Rights.

Citrix虚拟应用程序和桌面服务仍然the best choice for public cloud workload (VDA) integration.Citrix can adjust the cloud service to rapidly accommodate changes in our public cloud integration points with Azure, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services without requiring the customer to execute rapid upgrades. First and foremost, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service deliver the best experience for our customers and the most value for their user community.

Who does this impact?

This change gives customers who are leveraging Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 1912 LTSR with public cloud workloads a path to upgrade to the new Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 LTSR with continued public cloud workload support via Hybrid Rights.

Customers with perpetual licenses or on-prem subscriptions who need public cloud support in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 LTSR will need to transition or trade-up to Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service to obtain the associated Hybrid Rights.

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 1912 LTSR will continue to support public cloud workloads with its existing feature set for the duration of its product lifecycle, as documented in theProduct Matrix.

Customers running Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Service in Citrix Cloud are not impacted by this announcement.

Why is Citrix requiring Hybrid Rights for Public Cloud support?

For customers requiring public cloud support, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service remain the best choice for public cloud workload (VDA) integration. However, the journey to the cloud is different for each customer, and the impact of a global pandemic has showcased the need for greater flexibility.

By introducing Public Cloud support with Hybrid Rights, Citrix introduces additional flexibility in our customer’s journey to the cloud, such as:

  • Citrix recognizes that customers have geographical security restrictions as it relates to the physical hosting location of a cloud service. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service is available in selectregions. By supporting Public Cloud with Hybrid Rights, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops components can be installed on public cloud infrastructure to meet physical geographical hosting requirements.

  • Citrix recommends taking advantage of the latest features and functionality of our newest releases. By introducing Public Cloud support with Hybrid Rights, existing 1912 LTSR customers utilizing public cloud workloads now have a path forward to access the new 2203 LTSR features and capabilities.

  • Citrix offers a wide variety of cloud services, such as the Citrix Workspace experience (user interface) service, Workspace Environment Management service, and more. Previously, customers were restricted from utilizing those cloud services until their customer-managed controller was replaced with the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service. With Public Cloud support via Hybrid Rights, organizations can take advantage of more Citrix cloud services alongside a customer-managed controller hosted on-premises or on public cloud infrastructure.

What should customers do as a result of this announcement?

Customers who typically upgrade to the latest Long Term Service Release and leverage cloud workloads have two options:

  • Migrate to Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service. The Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service offer full support for public cloud and on-premises workloads and the latest integration enhancements.

  • Leverage the Transition and Trade-Up program to obtain Hybrid Rights with Public Cloud support, and then upgrade to the 2203 release, which has support for public cloud providers.

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service are regularly updated with the latest integration and performance optimizations with our key public cloud vendors, including Azure, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services. Reference thefeature matrixfor more information.

How is this change enabled in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203?

The Hybrid Rights subscription license file will have a new license attribute to showcase that the subscription license file is a Hybrid Rights license, as compared to an on-premises term or perpetual license. That new license attribute enables Public Cloud support within the 2203 or higher release.

Existing Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops customers with Hybrid Rights will receive an updated Hybrid Rights subscription license in their My Citrix Account after the 2203 release. Customers eager to utilize the Public Cloud support with the 2203 release can replace their existing Hybrid Rights license with the new license file. This license file will enable the use of Public Cloud provisioning capabilities within 2203 as documented in thefeature matrix. Customers will be notified when the license file is available, please allow Citrix time to deliver the updated Hybrid Rights license file uploaded for all customers.
